Sonosite overview

Can you give a brief overview explaining the POC market as opposed to general ultrasound market for someone not in the know? Sonosite throws around the "market share leader" phrase, but when told to a Siemens or other ultrasound rep they laugh and claim they're just a niche player.

No one would understand the word "niche" better than Siemens now that the Germans are a minor player in ultrasound. What a disaster.

POC ultrasound essentially means ultrasound done by the non-traditional user. Think critical care physicians, surgeons, emergency medicine, anesthesiologists, etc... "Mainstream" ultrasound is radiology/vascular/cardiac imaging done in general not by physicians themselves, but by sonographers.

SonoSite does dominate the POC market, though GE has mounted a strong challenge and other companies like Mindray, Analogic, etc... are making their mark, too.

Any particular part of the country or GPO contract "owned" by one company or the other?
