Switch to an account manager associate position

Hey guys, thinking about switching to an account manager position from a different position within Applied. Has anyone taken that route, and what did it entail? No sales experience, but several years at Applied already. I don't want to hear about how shitty an associate sales position may be at applied or how I should try somewhere else. As I've said I don't have a sales background but do have a business background and I like working here enough to continue a career at the company. Is the three week program sufficient for someone without a sales background to be in an associate field manager?

You will not get Get job. Why would a team take on someone without sales experience?

the 3 week class is to learn product and procedures not how to teach you to sell.

you have to learn how to wipe your own ass before you to Pre-K.

Honestly I think right now might be a good time if you want to stay here. Let's make no bones about it, you are at the home office and drinking the Kool-Aid. They want to make it seem like we are a big time player and an innovative company that is well respected. You have yet to walk into the OR to see what's really going on. We are a bottom tier company who makes cheap me-too products. We are not well respected and have very little clout based on company alone. Just want to make sure you are aware of perception vs. reality. But having said all that I think it's a good idea. Unlike the previous poster I think you will get the job. Applied is desperate for reps right now. There are so many open territories because once you are in the industry you won't willingly come to Applied. This opens the door for you. Also the path to getting your own territory may be easier because there will be many reps leaving after they get their retention bonuses. It's a rough time to be here due to the heavy reliance of Voyant in all comp plans. Very solid reps are unable to sell it due to no GPO and being locked out. They will be the first to go. This also opens the door for you. The three week course will not help you with any sales skills, but honestly you can hone those on the job. If you are a likable person and can come across that way to hospital folks you'll be fine. Remember, we are selling commodity items based on price alone here. When you get out in the field you will see that all the fluff about innovation and technology is exactly that, just fluff. The price is what we sell on. Good luck!

I appreciate the honest response. I’ve really been eyeing the field team for a while so your words are encouraging. I’m going to take a shot at it and roll from there. I know I’ll succeed, it’s a matter of getting my foot in the door and just getting on the team.

Real encouragement!!!!!

take the job and wait for everyone to quit and then you will Be successful.

why don’t you take a 3 day field ride with the reps in SoCal and see how applied is really treated. You will understand why so many people are frustrated and leave. Selling on price doesn’t cut it. If you want to do that, sell cars

I agree with the guy saying to take the field ride. Not to discourage you from taking the job, but to prepare you for how it's really like in the field. Tell him to take you into his largest hospital. Then ask him when Voyant will be in the hospital.

If you like working at Applied you won't like it once you start working in the field. You will see what Applied is truly like. But if you are just using it as a stepping stone then do it. I worked for Applied for 2.5 years then leveraged it to job with another company. It's what most people do. The only people that stay there are the ones who are part of the US Surgical club. You can spot them a mile away. Usually over weight Boomers who haven't been in the OR in a decade but are the ones creating the sales "strategy".
