From what I have breifly read recently, Idexx is doing pretty well! I am in the pharmaceutical industry and am looking seriously into a career change. Any ideas about size of territories for GA, compensation, etc?

Another long, dragged out launch of a new product. We though we'd be shipping Catalysts in early 08. . . now they're telling us later part of 08. Total BS!

Pay is good if you make your numbers; but the goals keep getting higher and the competition is getting fierce. Heska came out with some good equipment last year and made it a lot tougher for us. GA's a tough territory from what I've seen, but I'm in the west.

What do you want to know specifically?

What was their reasoning for the delayed launch? I thought they were supposed to start shipping those in March.

Interesting. Are they starting with a soft launch this spring, and then gradually shipping more units, or did they say, "Hey guys, we know we told you that we were launching Catalyst in March, but looks like we're going to push it back to October"?

Thanks for your response...I'm really intrigued by the new product and am anxious to see how the launch goes. Have you heard any feedback on the beta testing? I saw a demo of the machine at a vet conference...it's looks great but I'm interested to see how it holds up under daily use in a lab environment.

It's a nice analyzer- faster and easier to use, plus looks a lot better than the vettest. But it does the same thing (no new technology)...so unless someone just really wants the lastest and greatest, it's not going to appeal to everyone.

Do you know anything about Heska's new dri-chem?

Don't know much about the Heska machine...might try to get a demo at some point. If I learn more I'll post here.

Thanks for the info - please post any new info you have on the Catalyst launch. I appreciate it.

VetScan is proven technology...a little slow (12 minutes per slide), but very accurate. I think they had some problems with machine failures a year or so ago but I believe these problems have been resolved. It's tough to compare VetScan vs. the competition right now because no one knows if Catalyst is going to work as advertised.

VetScan is also a less expensive option but isn't as high-tech as the IDXX products.

I must have mis-understood you, you opened by stating "proven technology". What does Idexx's 25 yr old technology have that the vetscan doesn't? The last we used Idexx was still dry-slide technology, sources tell me that they are locked into a contract w/ Kodak until 2020, what is changing? Are they moving to more accurate wet chemistry like vetscan?

My bad, by "proven technology" I meant that the VetScan 2 has been out in vet clinics for a year or two, while Catalyst is a new product that could have problems after the launch (equipment failures, maybe a specific part breaks down consistently and needs to be replaced, etc.) The jump from plasma to whole blood is pretty big, so while the VetTest has been very dependable there are no guarantees with Catalyst. That's kind of why I was curious about the delayed launch (i.e. maybe beta testing isn't going well, etc.)

Nothing to do with dry slide vs. wet slide...I can't really speak to which one is better. Probably depends on who you ask!

I should have clarified the proven technology comment...I think Catalyst looks like a great machine. If it works as advertised, and the launch goes off without a hitch, I think it's a home run.

And also, I'm pretty sure you're right, they do have a contract for the dry slides until 2020. I thought it was with J&J but I could be wrong. I also think they're planning on renewing the contract before it expires.
