why does everyone hate the car question

why does everyone get so pissed off when people ask what the company car they could potentially be driving is? Whenever that question is asked there is nothing but rude comments-but Honestly...I think that is something that we all wonder when interviewing for companies!

Because it points to the vapid nature of the person asking it. You are going to get a car that is better than most Americans have, paid for in full, without any worrying about it. With people out of work and people buying used cars, you look like an asshole when you ask.

It will probably be a mid sized SUV or mid sized car. It will have a fair amount of options. If you live in the snowbelt it will probably have AWD. And if you are too tall, or too fat, or too whatever else to fit in, get over yourself. It is free. Or if you have 3 kids and your Impala won't fit 3 kids, GO BUY a minivan on your own dollar to haul those kids around in. Or if you are too tall, go buy something where you fit, which I always find to be an assanine argument because I am 6 foot 2 and rent cars all the time at my job and I fit every midsize I have driven.

THIS IS A CAR FOR WORK for the most part. Remember that.

The only exception to cars should be those who are handicapped (meaning you could get a placard for parking, none of this "Bad back shit") who should get a car that meets their needs. But for those with too many kids, or too fat, or too image concious to drive this car or that, I am VERY thankful I got the hell out of pharma and into device.

^^ that is a very good answer to yet another dumb question. OP, you also have to realize that we've all had friends laid off over the years and when you ask what kind of car you get, it understandably pisses us off because of the frivolity of the question. If that is your concern when interviewing, it simply reaffirms the immaturity and shallowness of the candidate. The car is free, the gas is free, the insurance is free. Go buy another family car if you don't like what you get as a company vehicle.

Random thoughts by Jack Handley:

Idiots like you wonder about it because you are stupid.

If you ask the question in the interivew, you are a loser.

Its morons like you that have killed our industry.

Its a fucking car for fukes sake! Get a grip on life.

listen..i get the fact that it is just a car, bonus that it's free along with the gas and insurance-that is not my point- My point was...why everyone gets so hostile towards the people that ask the question because every one of us who has interviewed for a pharma and med device job have thought about what type of car we will be driving- if you deny that then you are full of it-

If the fleet car are FREE, why does my company take $130 a month out of my paycheck for personal use when I very rarely put more than 10 miles of personal miles a month on it? Pretty steep per mile...

I think it is because people like posters 2,3,4 have little or no self-esteem, and feel quilty to have a good job in the first place. And Like WE said the car isn't free, you will be paying a heafty sum every month for the personal use of it.
Yes, even the pansy-asses like posters 2,3,4 are wondering what the car is, but are ashamed to admit it becasue they think so little of themselves.

And I just love it when a posters say something like "Its morons like you that have killed our industry."....Uh yeah, right.

This post makes no sense in reference to the rest of the posts. I have plenty of self esteem and deserve my job making the HIGH level of income I do, why? Because I bust my ass, post good numbers and play the corporate gig. And no, I am not in pharma. In device.

To the poster bitching about the money being deducted per pay check, that isn't a lot of money. Maybe you should use the car more to get your money's worth.

Some of us would rather drive our own cars for personal use. When I had a company car, it was my office and there wasn't room for anthing else. My portable desk was the passenger seat, etc.

Besides, company cars can't compete with a Benz.

Just take the amount off your taxes as a non-reimbursed biz expense if it chaps you so much.

I drive a VERY nice German car...probably too fancy for my job quite frankly, but I do sort of miss the boaty American company car that I didn't care when it got dinged or scratched or coffee spilled. The lack of responsiblity with a company car is a VERY nice thing.

Your company charges you a personal use charge so the IRS can't tax you on the value of the car as income. Either way you pay. I'd rather pay the company so the government can't waste any more of my dough.

I have not put the "car question" into account when seeking a job. It is a fabualous perk. However, once hired I am always curious as to the options because size matters. But I would never complain. Work at a car dealership if the car is the end all of the job you seek.

It demonstrates a lack of professionalism and seriousness to care about what cars are offered. There are tons of very good reps who are painted with a broad brush because of the unprofessional reps out there.

Impala, Taurus, etc.... who gives a shit? It's all the same thing. Pipeline, career development, corporate culture, recongnition programs. Those are some things to ask. What kind of car will I drive? Please. It's an employers market with alot of good people looking for work. Do yourself a favor and be happy with what you get. There are much more important things you can be asking.

I do appreciate the excuses of people defending why they ask the question:

* I have a bad back (Join the millions of others who do)
* I can't fit two car seats in the back (This is primarily a work car, I always had brochures/ther work junk in the back seats)
*I am too tall. ( I am 6 foot 2 and rent cars all the time and I do okay even in a smaller Corolla...I am suspicious of the too tall remark. I think what many are saying are "I am too tall and too wide.)
*That car is dorky (You want a fancy Euro car...go buy one)...

The only two fancy cars I have ever seen as a company car were a Volvo and a Saab. Pretty nice.

It's not the question is a bad one per se, it is just when you read stories about more massive layoffs in the next 6 months, you look like an unaware tool.
