why is ciprodex so expensive?

because it it not as easy as just throwing two components together. not to mention that most generics have a pretty big variance from the real thing. That the problem with people they have no idea at all about this business but they have all the answers.

So says the pharm rep.. Give me a break. Ciprodex is twice is much in the USA as in Canada. Tell me about the business in that.

In Canada, the government sets the price. That's why there is pressure from U.S. consumers to get meds from Canada. Unfortunately, all that would do is import another country's price controls. Capitalism works. The system we have can work. Companies develop new drugs. Prices are high initially so they can recoup research costs incurred from all research. After the patent runs out, drugs go generic making them affordable to everyone. This is as close to a win-win as you can get. Companies are allowed to make a profit, yes I did say profit. Consumers get the benefit of new drugs. Without the ability to make a profit, you can kiss new drug research bye-bye.

Tell me why this is a good product. Three years ago we told everyone to quit using ciloxan because it is crap compared to vigamox. Now it is great again because it is combined with dex? Bullshit, more ways to screw the public and insurance companies. And, thousand of physicians write prescriptions for multiple medications. There is no problem using two generics at one time.

Ciprodex is the best otic topical antibiotic combo on the market. True, moxifloxacin is better than Cipro, however if you actually used some brains, then you might know we can't just release a new product with moxifloxacin steroid combo until years and years of clinical trials to submit for FDA approval. You can combine two generics together but physicians would be risking off liability label issues. Physicians who are getting shafted by insurance companies and getting paid less and less these days. Why risk it?

OK jackass - you can't compare the Ciloxan/Vigamox scenario because we are talking about 2 different disease states. OE/Aomt have different causative pathogens than bacterial conjunctivitis so the efficacy will be different. And I'm sure there is much more to it than just taking 2 separate products vs. having one combined. Besides, this is a convenience based society and we want everything simplified. And I'm sure docs prefer to instruct patients with just one drop vs having to count them to handle to two. Seems simple but people are stupid. And lets face it, if Alcon didn't keep coming out with new products, we wouldn't have a job. So if it bothers you that much you need to find a different profession.

the funniest part about all this is.. regarding Outer Ear Infections.. a fucking antibiotic isn't even needed.

ha... how did our shit face company convince them to use this shit product anyway

hey idiot - last time i remember when otitis externa is cultured, its a bacterial infection. That would mean to use a anti-biotic. Even if physicians use cortisporin over cipro, its still an antibiotic

yeah... I'm sure when all of the clinical studies done by companies (that have nothing to do with Alcon) showed that the majority of OE is caused by Psuedamonas... you DEFINATELY don't need an antibiotic...

Btw... it is STILL cheaper then Generic Floxin. Checked online tonight. Generic Floxin 10ml... $149.00. Ciprodex 7.5ml... 139.00

1 full course of treatment in a floxin 10ml... 4 in a Ciprodex. That you can treat 4 ear infections or 2 recurring bilateral infections with one copay Dbags...

what is the dosing on ciprodex? i thought generic ofloxacin is once a day.

yeah, only for OE... where you apparently don't need an antibiotic (which is ALL that floxin is...). BTW- their own study showed that they don't get to a clinical cure rate comparable to ciprodex until day 23... sweet. That is WELL worth QD dosing...

why is it so expensive , well. The senior execs of the company like to live in big expensive houses, drive fancy cars , and wear brand new underware every day !

By the way, your spaceship is due to return to Planet Unranus in about 12 hours. Please don't miss the flight. Back home, your supreme commander is counting on you giving it a full report on pharma pricing here on planet earth .
Don't blow it alien !

and??? I realize what AOE is..

There are plenty of ways to clear AOE other than your shit product.... and a antibacterial isn't necessary.

Your talking to someone who has spent 15 years dedicated to this specific issue.

A bit late to this thread, but my doc just prescribed Ciprodex for what he suspects is a bacterial infection.

$165, $159, $155, and $135 USD are quotes I got from local pharmacies. Something like a dollar per drop???

Online pharmacies (claim US based) had quotes of about $21, for what I assume is a generic.

Can anyone shed light on the current state of this in the US?

Got any recommendations from your vast experience?

Slightly off topic, if other countries have price controls that are so much cheaper, why do US manufacturers even sell to them, if it's truly a loss? True, less profit = less new drug development, but must US taxpayers be based with funding the rest of the world's health?

Somewhere between $20 and $160 lies a gap in more than just reason and profit.
