WISH I GOT THE PACKAGE

Yup, I left early on, and walking out off the GV parking lot on that last day was one of the most fantastic days of my life in recent memory. Started my next job the following week, and haven't looked back since. IT was a lot more fun at Wyeth in the early 2000's, back in the BF days. It's been downhill ever since, and since the merger, it's gone from bad to worse. A lot of the top talent has left, or is making plans to leave. Unfortunately most of the people that want to leave won't be able to get a package as easily if they'd tried a lot earlier...

and the package you got as a legacy wyeth didn't even come close to the Pfizer ATS package given in Groton & LaJolla...

Maybe not, but the hands on technical experience that Wyeth provided proved far more valuable in obtaining a better position that I started immediately, as opposed to managing outsourced technical resources, which seems to be the predominant IT skill set at legacy Pfizer (as well as many other Pharma IT shops).

Not necessarily, from what I've seen of Wyeth's IT infrastructure, its about 10 years behind Pfizer's technical infrastructure, especially in the Database, Desktop Management & Software Distribution, and OS Platform support. Hell, even their support of SAP outsourced.

Sad part, looking out into the near future it is only going to get much more horrible for those that remain. It's a job, although it sucks, better than not having one I guess.

Amazing how quickly Pfizer went from being a highly prized employer to onr that is avoided.

I'm just waiting for Wyeth IT to realize "Hey, this is a big *global* company. We can't hide in Collegeville anymore."

Bueller? Bueller?

Take the package and run. Go to a company that values IT. I thought I would be at PFE forever but I asked for the package because the mismanagement of resources and the amount of money wasted by poor decisions was too frustrating to deal with any more.

I went to another health provider as the infrastructure head. This company is small, adaptable to a fast changing environment we live in today, is becoming modernized under my supervision, and values IT as a critical part of the business. I ensure that we value the business and keep a lean operating machine.

We have some development and project resources who are contractors but everyone else in IT is an employee. You recruit good talent and show them appreciation then watch how great the performance is. I enjoy going to work every day again. I'm the first one in and the last out the door because I see good progress every day.

I may be the top infrastructure manager but I roll up my sleeves and dig into the architecture and design planning and often lead the implementation. I don't sit in a corner office looking to figure out the right words to say to upper management so I can keep my job. I sit in a cube farm with all my resources. We work together.

When faced with budget cuts, who in their right mind just says every department must reduce by 10%? That was the Pfizer way and probably still is. So a lean service group providing top-notch services at the right cost level would be punished because another group was running fat because the service lead was bad and their direct reports were no better.

Decent IT hiring is not one of PFE's core competencies. How many art majors became senior director's? How many can't even work their computers (outside of PowerPoint)?

Does anyone remember back in the early 2000's all the directors that PFE IT hired? Lot's of chiefs who could talk the talk. But they all took a walk because none lasted through the decade.

If you get a chance for the package take it. If you have more than 20 years in the company, stay -- you've already seen and been through a lot of changes since the 90s when PFE was a ma and pop shop.

One question, which legacy sites is Pfizer shutting down? I heard Sandwich (shocking), Kalamazoo (surprising), and La Jolla. I hear IT was moved from Morris Plains to Madison and MOPS will be shut down eventually. Is IT still getting kicked out of NYC? I would love to hear which sites globally are going away.
