Laser sales

I was told by a doc in KS today that Emele medical was down to three sales professionals all others have been laid off. I think they are planning to close up shop very soon. What's the word on this company.

The word on Eleme is the same thing it has been since they started to try and push Smoothshapes.

They are a one trick poney (well I guess they have two tricks with SmoothLipo), trying to compete against much more established large laser companies that have millions in the bank, a full product line and an infastructure to compete long term.

I'm suprised they havent already folded and anybody that takes a job with Eleme is taking a big risk at looking like job hopper when things don't work out.

I believe it, I would hate to be a Cutera rep.

The Pearl has been their only new product for the past few years, lagging way behind trying to get into the body market, high costs for new applicators and high up front costs.

Sciton blows. Some good technology and some territories do well, but overall high turnover and an expensive model that most docs don't care to have and they are consistenly outsold by the big boys.

Many laser companies that have downsized are now starting to get sales again, but I would still avoid working for any small laser companies or companies with only a limited product line.

Syneron acquired Candela about a month back and there are talks for more laser companies in the process of acquisitions.

Not true about Sciton. Been selling with them several years now and the turnover is low. Most was layoffs due to economy-necessary fat trimming at the end of 2008. Technology is great, innovative and we have launched a new product every year I have been here. Price is competitive when viewed apples to apples. VERY reliable...only had 3 technicians called for tune up work in 3 years with Sciton. Laser reps are not starving if they are any good at their jobs and taking care of their customers. I sold more in 2009 than 08 or 07, but a previous poster above was accurate in that commissions have been reduced due to economy, so $300K+ is no longer a reality. Top performers are closer to $200K. I finished at $163K in 2009. Hope that helps.

Sciton BBLows! I have so many customers that complain about the shitty results they get when compared to what I have. I just laugh and tell them to call me when they payoff their mistake.

They been through 3 reps in 1 1/2 years in the NE.

True...the NE is having trouble finding good long-term reps for the area...the rest of the country does not have nearly the kind of turnover the NE has had. Florida has had turnover too but that's about it. The fact is reps that have been hired in the NE and FL recently that aren't selling like the rest of the country is. You've got to be able to keep up in this industry. 5 of the 27 reps have been with Sciton since 2000 or earlier. 15 more have been there at least 3 years. Not alot of overall turnover in my opinion compared to most other laser and device companies.

Hey guys,

I made 300k+ last year. Though this is rare nowadays in this industry. Most reps are making around 120-150k. There is a lot of consolidation within the industry. Training across the board is nonexistent, but if you "need" a formal training program than you're not cut out for this job. It's a fun gig, and i really like the products I'm selling. Plastics, facial plastics, and hospitals (universities) are where the money is. Derms are slow, cautious, and more conservative. You either have to know someone if you don't have experience, or have a lot of experience and not know someone.

I'm going to full on call you a liar that you made over 300k last year. If you did, I'm guessing you were not a W-2'd rep and you must be independent repping a few lines. I'm in the business and our rep of the year made less than 200k. I know a lot guys in the industry and I can only think of one person that did over 300k and it certainly was not you.

Not trying to hate you your success, but I think it's important to call out people posting BS. If you did, I'd be curious what products you were repping and which company if you have the balls to back up your claims. I know you wont though.

Do you have any thoughts on Solta Medical? I hear reps there do 200+ or is that bs?

Solta Medical or basically Thermage and Fraxel. Basically Fraxel good, Thermage junk. Reps can do good with some of the products, but the problem is an industry problem not necessarily a product problem.

Revenue for medical spas and doctors with lasers is down dramatically and the industry was so oversold in 2003-2008 that there are a lot of cheap used Thermage and Fraxel lasers for people to purchase or offices just looking to get out of aesthetics all together.

Another problem from a career standpoint is that laser sales does not necessarily look good on a resume. Yes, it's capital equipment and youre selling to docs and I personally think it takes a lot of talent to succeed in laser sales, but it's viewed as the used car sales of the medical world.

This was ok in the heyday of laser sales becuase everybody was making over 250k and most were in the 300k-400k area. But today, to make 100k-130k and to lug a laser around and demo to sleasy medical spa owners and docs, it's not worth it if you have other options.

Used cars sales LMAO those so called used cars cost as much as a Range Rover. Yes it's a grind but having Cap Equip exposure is a good thing most out there would not last 6 months. ! Lasers are not the only Cap Equip and if you can move them you mostly can move other high ticket items. I would rather have a background that most don't have.

300k is very tough to do these days! The last poster is right, you must be 1099 or full of sh*t. There are still some good products in demand. I know Fraxel and Thermage are still selling and would not still be around if they did not work. Solta is a good company to work for. They do not have to sell a laser to stick around. They make all thier money on the tips. I have been in the industry for years and know several of their reps. They seem to be happy.

The previous poster is correct. I was in laser sales for almost four years and both recruiters and sales managers don't give a whole lot of credit for a laser sales background. It's like being a used car dealer (at some companies), sell the laser and you never see the rep again. Not necessarily the reps fault, becuase to hit quota you have to be looking for new business.

If you spend too many years in lasers you can get pigeon holed and it's hard to move to a different area of medical sales. Most laser reps don't get much experience in the hospitals which is a negative for companies selling in to hospitals.

Can anybody tell me what it is like working at Palomar? What are some of the top reps doing in 2011. Any info would be helpful. Thanks
