I think that this latest stock debacle is showing were really not a stable investment for anyone. Investors want returns. They don't like seeing companies burning money for the sake of keeping executives in cushy gigs.

I’m not sure I believe the MRK rumor, but it kind of makes sense, because they are obviously getting back into the space. This would be a good transition for them, plus the connections with Sheldon.
