Useless Managers

Most of them are useless and there are way too many of them right now.
All my manager does is ride in the field. Nothing else. Its really a crime this guy has this title

Managers should have accounts to work, maybe the top 3 largest or a section of territory ( exclusive of the territory reps). Reps should do a mid year review and Yr end review of how the manager performed in your territory and submitted anonymous to HR.

If mgrs are useless why would you want them calling on any customer?

Duane Larkin of the SWOU hands down. No experience in this industry. Can't understand why the Jack Welch GE model doesn't fit this business.

"You should be able to tell your doctors that, 'I'm not leaving until I convince you that 'xyz' drug is the best for your patients." Try doing that in a CROWDED market w/ no solid clinic data to back you up . . . you mindless corporate lackey!

Did Gary and Novartis get a free toaster in the deal when you were hired? Was it "regifted" as your departure gift from GE? Wouldn't doubt it. He's a really classy, generous guy, moon pies and all.

Can talk endlessly about nothing. Pulls reps out of the field for cc's, meetings, and sharing "best practices." "Let's keep the 'positive tension.'" - Last time I checked that is a contradictory term you incompetent dolt!

Let's talk about the team ...oh yeah, it's not what the team wants it's what he wants, God forbid he ask us. You need to give value to get value, until then you will never earn the respect of the people you intend to "lead." Casual meetings ain't gonna cut it.

"I believe we have a bit of a trust issue here." You're damn right we have a bit of a trust issue. I wouldn't trust you w/ anything other than picking up Gary Menichini's dry cleaning, which I'm sure you are always 1st in line for that job. Increasing results is not the answer for job security, stroking your bosses fragile ego is.

To that end, I'm sure he'll be welcome at Novartis FOREVER! Thanks for your contribution (translation . . . nothing.)

To allow them to gain insight into the realities of this job as to become more worthwhile and possibly give them something more to do than a bunch of useless ride alongs. Maybe the RD can then assess their performance on a call in these accounts.

You are a coward to start this post. Why don't you reveal your name and tell the manager yourself. Pussy.

BECAUSE: If this person listed their name, they would be Pip'd and let go in rapid succession. That's why we love CP. We can vent and tell the truth all at once. It's a one stop shop for telling on power hungry dickheads, leaving them with nothing to do but guess who is responsible

You don't think they gained insight when they were reps? Did they forget the realities, troubles and hassles of being a rep when they became a manager? When you think like a rep, you stay a rep. If you want to be a mgr, you have to start thinking like a mgr: it gives you a different perspective on "reality". Not wrong, but different. Wrong from many reps' individual perspectives, but different because you now have to look at what is working or not working in a district of 10 reps. Why is the business not improving? It's not just because of lousy forecasts and unrealistic quotas. Perhaps, the rep or reps who are not doing well are making some errors in judgment, or not seeing the picture completely, or not working a full day, or half day, or seeing the easy to see LVPs, etc.
Many managers become pompous and apparently make bad decisions, because when I was there, I had some pretty weird ideas given to me. I also had some very good managers and directors who tried to point me in the right direction. They wanted to do well, me to do well, and the company to do well. Nothing wrong with that.

Sounds like you found that perspective and your writings proved the original posterrs ideas have merit. Times change and the rep role seems to be a daily moving target, if you haven't been in this role in the last 2 years you can barely understand it.

Most managers I have know in the last 20 years were the ones that worked half or less days but spent most of their time ass kissing the bosses when they were reps, is that thinking like a manager? The others mostly were hell bent on a power play of some sort., Maybe 5% were solid understanding guys that you really wanted to work for.

Additionally, most pharma companies want salespeople but treat them as children, (plus, so much is about the process and letting consultants run the business - where are the leaders anymore - mostly at biotechs) and don't pay out like they did in the past and thus the "big pharma" mentality arises and it's much like a union or government worker - "you owe me".

thats def Neil in West Palm...He has no clue that his reps DO nothing cause his numbers are good..well duh docs know the product hope his team never has a real product to sell i m thinkin he does he not get out of his pj's? he does NOT even bother to chk call times and sigs pharma 10-2 THATS WHY

Michael Schucter is the best! Super motivating and doesn't have a big ego.

Agreed. Everyone in his region hates him including his managers. No one respects him. He is a major part of why Neuro has turned to crap..this division used to be great. Did he ever carry a bag? He has absolutely unreasonable expectations. Asks a million questions and doesn't let you answer without interrupting and cutting you down. I've seen him shut down a whole room of some of the most talented and well rounded reps I've worked with over the years out of fear of having an opposing view of his. His view is all that matters. Demands "sales" strategies (from books) that are antiquated and are absolutely not practical in this environment. Word is he's even pissed off docs by being to obnoxious. Major winer. Tries to scare people by implying jobs are on the line. Word is he is definitely not to be trusted either. Tells everyone they should be practicing their jobs in their free (personal time). Hey Michael, try practicing not being a jerkoff, and maybe your reps will look up to you, respect you, and want to do well for both themselves and you. Real leaders have the respect of their followers.
