J&J is what went wrong. It is just the way it goes when they acquire a device company. They tear it apart.
The only thing wrong with Acclarent was retarded expectations of the acquirers. Pay 9x revenue for a single-product company serving a niche market with little/no IP protection (balloon on a wire, what a concept), and you're going to get screwed no matter how smart/motivated your people are. Creating a 100MM med device market over 6 years is an accomplishment no matter how you slice it. Just not worth the price JnJ paid. If JNJ had doubled down and acquired some of other ENT companies early on, it could have been an interesting rollup play, but some genius at JJDC decided to accept the "FESS balloons for Jesus" financial model and the rest is history. The "problems" mentioned are marketing/ops 101 when you're trying to clean up a mess (cost cutting).
They were never indicted. DOJ left them alone because they did nothing wrong. Now both are rock stars at their respective new gigs...haters never win dude
