The guy can't be stupid. Think about it. He came from a non-descript company, was able to get his names on patents and papers although he has no formal technical or clinical credentials, and was able to convince Masimo to hire him as the VP of Marketing at the age of (37?) for a base salary of $190,000/year at the end of 2007 (look at the SEC mandated records). He has also managed to not only remain at Masimo for the last 4 years, but he got himself promoted a few months after he came on board. How did he do it?
