Sociopaths, Apaths, & Empath Dynamic In Our Industry

Lots of sociopaths make it into leadership positions. They appear charming and intelligent but do not feel emotion. They do not follow through but are excellent at manipulation. They surround themselves with apaths to aid their actions.

They target ...
the promising empath who truly cares and has the balls to speak up
the analytical empath who sees through their selfish, faulty logic
the beautiful, innocent empath who would make a great conquest after hours, if he can play to her emotions enough to snow her

Six years ago I watched this on my team. He was my partner and would've been a great manager if our boss hadn't gotten rid of him. He was our equivalent to a DST, inherited and unwanted. She was my teammate and friend in the region, so devastated and humiliated that she quit rather than turn him in.

My "leader" ex-manager is still there with a team full of apaths.

You are so spot on, friend. People don't understand how hard it actually is to be an attractive woman in the workplace who happens to have a brain. If you want to truly be taken seriously, you have to actually play down your looks. You have to play down your looks so people focus on your work rather than your other assets. If you are pretty, I can't tell you how many men assume that you are there for their sexual amusement. And then you are crazy, a bitch, etc. when you reject them, even if they are married, ugly, have some sort of obvious communicable disease, etc.

So I actually keep it under wraps. I dress really on the frumpy side every day. I don't do my hair as sexily as I could. My make up is very understated. It's professional but doesn't call attention to me. On the occasions where I do have to reveal that oh my God, I'm actually a looker, it is like watching a bunch of men lose their minds. I can't deal with that every day. I guess it's different if you don't know you have it in you. But men treat you like you owe them something when you're good looking. I'd rather go through life quietly and have my beauty for me. I feel good about myself. Only the good men need to know.

Soooooooo true. I learned this early in this industry after a trainer made a pass at me. I was the only married woman not hooking up in the class. He was a fucking prick after I rejected him. The next two weeks were very uncomfortable for me. Since then, I have played my looks down to an extreme. It's not worth it.

No, it's not worth it. If you show you're beauty, you will either end up sleeping around at work and everyone knows you're a whore even if you think you are creatively hiding it like the married folk do, or you have to fight jerks off who will then trash your reputation and try to screw with your job because they're scared of what you will say. Don't forget the other women talk about you.

Who is this dude? Is he a manager? I've seen this name on many threads.

Very trustworthy manager. Fired from Sanofi after the company had to pay big bux due to his collossal screw ups. Job before that was demoted from VP to RD then got fired. Great track record. Really stands behind his people too!

Nobody here knows him anymore because this place has become a revolving door...I am assuming he is standing on an intersection in Biloxi Mississippi with a card box sign: "Homeless, anything helps, God bless"

Sociopaths and people willing to lie and look the other way get promoted in pharma. They care about money, not the corruption that affects patient lives and increases everyone’s healthcare costs. Just my opinion of trends after watching for years.

And to make a bigger bonus check. Sadly, many sales reps fall into this category and are in denial. Apaths who see it and do nothing are just as guilty.

I'm sure you will get attacked by our leadership in denial, but this is spot on. All too familiar. We are led by sociopathic mother fuckers who encourage this behavior.

I think this is SO TRUE. LOOK AT WHO GETS PROMOTED AND REVERED. IT IS almost always THE SOCIOPATH types.
WORST OF ALL ARE THE SOCIOPATHS THAT ARE ALSO PSYCHO - INSANELY GOOD ACTORS THAT PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT PATIENTS AND BE “FRIENDS” WITH TEAMMATES BUT IT IS ONLY REALLY ABOUT THEMSELVES AND MONEY.

TRULY CARING, KIND PEOPLE ARE USED, BULLIED, LIED TO, OSTRACIZED, PUSHED OUT from what I’ve seen. Or they leave on their own as soon as they finally figure out the SICKO pharma sales environment OR they stay quiet and end up depressed.

IF YOU ARE A “LEADER” ask yourself how that came to be and what was the cost to patients. The true cost. Generics work too. There are less expensive drugs available that work great that the company doesn’t even train you on. They only tell you what they want you to parrot. If you know this and continue to market and sell as much as possible, you may really be a SOCIOPATH.

Sorry that happened to you. I can relate.

Are you guys completely sure that the "sweet empath" maybe isn't a well liked sociopath? How do you know the sweetness isn't just an image thing. I say this because I rarely ever see too many people like someone in ths business if they're too sweet. Let's be dead honest! I see a whole lot of fake nice along with passive aggressive nasty behavior that's sometimes also secretly slutty and then hearing..."That can't be true. She's just soooo nice and well liked. You just don't know her." Then you attend a pod meeting and you might hear a snarky comment about the number of Mexicans in the restaurant or they'll make a cute nasty comment about the waitresses shoes and so on... Sometimes, in this industry, people like their pretty girls fake and bitchy. If you're truly nice and a good person you'll have a very difficult time.

AMEN. Truly nice? Good luck. You’ll need it if you dare stick around.
The level of fake-nice two-faced people and actual sociopaths in pharma sales is beyond words. Genuinely good people get trampled on in this “culture.”

Holy cow. I swear I could give you a name and division and it's probably not the same people. That's how damn common the above scenario is... People's careers have been majorly set back by situations like the shove scenario. Seriously...

I agree. Sadly. Some of these posts show a lot of observation and insight from coworkers that I did not know existed. Glad we aren’t the only ones that see and realize these dynamics playing out. Sociopaths scare the sh*t out of me because they can be so good at lying and tricking people and have no remorse for being evil. Pharma sales attracts sociopaths.

for every recruiter, the phone screen:

1 Empath: “I truly care and want to help HCPs help patients.”
5 Sociopaths: “I’m good looking, can sell ice to an Eskimo, want to make money and dominate others. I will be the best.”
10 Apaths: “I want to win and I care.” (Translation: I want to make money and that’s all I really care about.)

Let's be honest: NOBODY HERE IN SALES CARES ABOUT THE PATIENT. THE SCRIPT COMES FIRST!!! ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE BEHIND IN YOUR SALES GOAL! WHOEVER SAYS OTHERWISE IS PHONY, FAKE AND A LIAR! BIG PHARMA IS ABOUT ONE THING ONLY: M-O-N-E-Y!!!!

Well my friend, I see you understand all too well the industry that you work for! Yes, it has always been about the money, and will always be about the money! The patient’’s well-being means nothing. All that matters is that we get scripts for our drug. There are no ethics, there are no morals, there is no sense of responsibility. It is all about the Benjamins! And with my lack of ethics and morals, I am a perfect fit for this industry!

All industries are “ABOUT ONE THING ONLY, M-O-N-E-Y.” That includes charities. Grow up, kiddo.

I don't deny that. But the Pharma industry should stop pretending it cares about the patient. If we would truly care, crappy Rexulti 's price tag wouldn't equal a mortgage payment! We gauge our customers like no other industry!

We all know by now that reps on average make one to two "calls" per day. (sample drops of course) Otsuka would rather keep these inefficient people employed to keep the price of our drugs high, rather than lay off reps! We could easily do away with 60-70% of reps and there would be no negative impact on sales whatsoever. Additionally, we have Lundbeck reps. No other industry can and does function this way. The country as a whole must endure a huge financial burden so that few in the Pharma industry can enjoy exorbitant pay and benefits.
